The Boy in the Library
In 1652, a six-year-old boy lost his father. Friedrich Leibniz had been a professor of moral philosophy at the University of Leipzig, and he left behind something far more valuable than money: he left behind a library. Young Gottfried was given unrestricted access to his father's vast collection of books, and he devoured them with a hunger that would define his entire life.By the age of twelve, he had taught himself Latin. By fourteen, he was writing poetry. By twenty, he had earned a doctorate in law. But Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz was never content to master just one subject. He was one of the last true polymaths of Western civilization—a man who could discuss philosophy with theologians, mathematics with scientists, law with jurists, and politics with diplomats, all with equal authority.

The System Builder
Leibniz was born on July 1, 1646, in Leipzig, Germany. His father had been a professor, his mother the daughter of a law professor. The household was pious Lutheran, but young Gottfried's intellectual curiosity knew no bounds. He entered the University of Leipzig in 1661 as a law student, but he was soon drawn to philosophy, mathematics, and the new science of figures like Galileo, Bacon, and Descartes.He dreamed of reconciliation—of bringing together the ancient wisdom of Aristotle with the modern insights of his contemporaries. This was not merely an academic exercise. Leibniz lived through the aftermath of the Thirty Years' War, a conflict that had devastated Germany. He believed that if people could learn to reason together, they could learn to live together.
At the age of twenty, he published his first major philosophical work, De Principio Individui ("On the Principle of the Individual"). In this thesis, he argued that individuals are not to be explained either by matter alone or by form alone, but by their "whole being". This idea contained the first germ of his most famous philosophical doctrine: the monad.
The Monad and the Best of All Possible Worlds
What is a monad? Leibniz believed that the universe is ultimately made up of simple, indivisible substances—units of perception and appetite that exist independently of one another. Each monad reflects the entire universe from its own unique perspective. There are no causal relations between monads; instead, God established a "pre-established harmony" between them, like a group of perfectly synchronized clocks ticking in perfect unison.This led Leibniz to one of his most famous—and most controversial—claims: that this is the "best of all possible worlds". God, being infinitely wise and good, had surveyed all possible worlds and chosen to create the one that contained the greatest amount of goodness and the least amount of evil.
This idea was mercilessly satirized by Voltaire in his novel Candide, in which the character Dr. Pangloss repeats Leibniz's optimistic philosophy while enduring one disaster after another. But Leibniz was not naive about evil. His Theodicy (1710) was a serious attempt to reconcile the existence of suffering with the goodness of God. He argued that evil was a necessary part of the best possible world—a world that, on the whole, was better than any alternative.
Interesting Fact: Leibniz corresponded with over 1,000 people, writing approximately 15,000 letters throughout his lifetime. His total output is estimated at 50,000 items, totalling 100,000 pages—yet relatively little was published during his lifetime.
The Calculus Controversy
In 1675, Leibniz laid the foundations of both integral and differential calculus. It was an independent discovery—he had developed his methods without knowledge of Isaac Newton's work. Newton had made his discoveries in the mid-1660s, but Leibniz published his results first.The dispute over priority began in 1708, when the Oxford mathematician John Keill accused Leibniz of having plagiarized Newton's method of fluxions. Leibniz protested, but the controversy spiraled into one of the most bitter disputes in the history of science. Newton, as president of the Royal Society, used his position to support his own claims.
Most modern historians believe that Newton and Leibniz developed calculus independently. But the dispute had lasting consequences: it isolated English mathematicians from their European counterparts for generations. Leibniz's notation, however, proved superior and is still used today.
Interesting Fact: Leibniz also invented a mechanical calculating machine that could perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. He was fascinated by the binary number system and dreamed of creating a universal mathematical-logical language—a "characteristica universalis" that would allow people to resolve disputes through calculation.
The Diplomat and the Visionary
Leibniz was not just a philosopher and mathematician—he was also a diplomat, a legal advisor, a historian, a librarian, and an engineer. He served the dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg in Hanover for forty years, and travelled frequently throughout the Holy Roman Empire. He also advised Peter the Great and helped found the Berlin Academy of Sciences in 1700, becoming its first president.He was deeply committed to the reunification of Christians, seeking to resolve doctrinal disagreements between Catholics and Protestants. He was interested in Chinese thought and corresponded with Jesuit missionaries, believing that Europe could learn from the wisdom of the East.
Despite his many responsibilities, he remained cheerful in disposition, though at times impatient. He never married or had children. He spent most of his time writing—about 50,000 items in total, including 15,000 letters sent to about 1,000 correspondents. Among them were some of the most notable thinkers of his time, including Locke, Malebranche, Bayle, and Arnauld.
The Legacy
Leibniz died on November 14, 1716, in Hanover. He was seventy years old. He had outlived many of his contemporaries, and his work was often misunderstood or ignored during his lifetime. But his influence grew steadily after his death. His philosophy would inspire Kant, Hegel, and generations of German idealists. His logical work laid the foundation for modern logic. His calculus transformed mathematics. His vision of a universal language inspired efforts to create formal languages and, ultimately, computers.He was the last great polymath of Western civilization—a man who could think about the nature of existence and the design of a calculating machine with equal facility. He believed that reason could solve problems, that knowledge could be unified, and that the world was, despite everything, the best possible. And perhaps, in his own way, he was right.
