In 1791, an Italian doctor named Luigi Galvani made a dead frog's leg twitch by touching it with two different metals. He declared he had discovered "animal electricity"—a mysterious force that lived in the flesh of all creatures. But another Italian scientist, Alessandro Volta, disagreed. He believed the frog was just a conductor, not the source of the spark. This disagreement would lead to one of the greatest inventions in human history: the first electric battery.
The Boy from Como
Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio Volta was born on February 18, 1745, in Como, Italy, into a noble but not wealthy family. His childhood was marked by a very late start in language acquisition, which worried his family, but which resolved itself with complete fluency around the age of seven. When he was only seven years old, his father died, leaving the family in difficult circumstances. Young Alessandro was educated by ecclesiastical relatives who steered him toward the priesthood.But Volta had other plans. He enrolled in the seminary in Como for studies in philosophy and the classics, but his true passion lay elsewhere. He read Lucretius's De rerum natura and wrote a Latin poem about the latest physics discoveries. By the time he was in his twenties, Volta was already corresponding with leading scientists across Europe about electricity—a subject that would consume his entire life.
In 1774, at the age of twenty-nine, Volta became superintendent of schools in Como. Two years later, he was appointed professor of physics there, and in 1778, he secured the position that would define his career: professor of experimental physics at the University of Pavia. He would hold this chair for nearly forty years.
The Electrophorus and the Pistol
Before his greatest invention, Volta had already made significant contributions to the study of electricity. In 1775, he improved the electrophorus, a device that could generate static electricity. He also discovered and isolated methane gas in 1776, and even invented a remotely operated pistol that used an electrical spark to ignite a mixture of gases—a forerunner of the internal combustion engine.But it was his work on animal electricity that would lead to his most famous creation.
The Great Debate: Volta vs. Galvani
When Galvani published his findings on "animal electricity," Volta was initially intrigued. He repeated Galvani's experiments, but he came to a very different conclusion. Volta observed that the contractions only occurred when two different metals were used. He realized that the frog's legs merely served as a conductor of electricity, or what we would now call an electrolyte.For Volta, the electricity was not coming from the frog at all—it was generated by the contact between the two different metals. He argued that the frog was simply a detector, not a source. The debate became one of science's most famous disputes, with both sides fiercely defending their positions.

In 1799, Volta built the device that would make him immortal. He constructed a pile of alternating disks of zinc and silver (or copper and pewter), separated by paper or cloth soaked in salt water or sodium hydroxide. When he connected the top and bottom of the pile with a wire, a continuous electrical current flowed for the first time in history.On March 20, 1800, Volta announced his invention in a letter to the president of the Royal Society of London. The scientific world was electrified. For the first time, scientists had a sustainable source of electrical current that they could use for experiments. Within six weeks of Volta's announcement, chemists had used the battery to discover electrolysis—the decomposition of water into hydrogen and oxygen.

Napoleon was deeply impressed. He immediately awarded Volta a gold medal and granted him a generous pension. According to some accounts, Volta and Napoleon became lifelong friends who corresponded frequently by mail. In 1809, Napoleon appointed Volta as a senator of the newly constituted Kingdom of Italy. The following year, he bestowed upon Volta the title of Count.
The meeting between these two great minds symbolized the intersection of science and power in the Napoleonic era. While Napoleon was conquering Europe, Volta was conquering the mysteries of electricity.
In 1823, Volta began to suffer from a series of illnesses that would eventually take his life. He retired to his estate in Como, where he lived a quiet life with his family. Alessandro Volta died on March 5, 1827, at the age of eighty-two.
In 1881, more than fifty years after his death, the international scientific community honored him by naming the unit of electric potential the volt (V). His name also appears on the moon—the Volta crater on the lunar surface carries his legacy into the stars.
Volta's victory over Galvani was not complete. In time, both scientists were proven right: Galvani was correct that biological tissues generate electricity, and Volta was correct that the frog was not the source of the current he observed. But Volta's greatest legacy was not winning an argument—it was giving the world a tool that would power the future.
