Upon his return to Syracuse, Archimedes entered the service of King Hieron II. It was Hieron who presented him with one of history's most famous puzzles. The king had commissioned a beautiful golden crown — a wreath to be dedicated to the gods — but he suspected that the goldsmith had cheated him by mixing silver into the gold. The crown's weight was correct, but was it pure? There was no way to tell without melting it down.

The Man Who Moved the World

Archimedes' genius extended far beyond the bath. He formulated the law of the lever, declaring with characteristic audacity: "Give me a place to stand on, and I will move the Earth." He invented the compound pulley, allowing a single person to lift impossibly heavy loads. He designed the Archimedes screw — a device for raising water that is still used in agriculture today. He built a mechanical planetarium that could model the motions of the sun, moon, and planets.

He calculated the value of pi with remarkable precision, establishing that it lies between 3 1/7 and 3 10/71. He discovered the ratio between the volume of a sphere and the cylinder that encloses it — a finding so dear to him that he requested a diagram of a sphere inside a cylinder be carved on his tombstone. He investigated the Archimedean spiral, a curve that bears his name to this day. He devised a system for expressing very large numbers using exponentiation. And he anticipated the development of calculus by nearly two thousand years, using a method of infinitesimals to derive and prove his theorems.

The Engineer Who Defied an Empire

Archimedes was not merely a theorist; he was also a practical engineer of extraordinary skill. When the Romans laid siege to Syracuse in 214 BCE during the Second Punic War, the city's defense fell largely to him. He designed war machines of terrifying effectiveness: catapults that hurled massive projectiles, cranes that could lift Roman ships out of the water and dash them against the rocks, and possibly even a system of mirrors that focused sunlight to set enemy vessels ablaze. The stories of his ingenuity are so extraordinary that they sound like legend — but the Romans themselves were so awed by his machines that they reportedly believed he was a demigod.

The Death of a Genius

When Syracuse finally fell in 212 or 211 BCE, the Roman general Marcus Claudius Marcellus gave specific orders: Archimedes was not to be harmed. He admired the old mathematician and wanted to meet him.

But the soldiers who stormed the city did not know his face. One of them found an elderly man hunched over a diagram in the sand, drawing mathematical figures. The soldier ordered him to follow. Archimedes, absorbed in his work, refused. "Do not disturb my circles," he is said to have said. The soldier, enraged or perhaps simply impatient, killed him on the spot.

Marcellus was reportedly devastated. He gave Archimedes a proper burial and honored the mathematician's final wish: a sphere and cylinder were carved upon his tomb. Decades later, the Roman orator Cicero would visit the neglected grave and recognize the monument, ensuring that Archimedes' resting place was not forgotten.

The Legacy That Refuses to Fade

Archimedes died over two thousand years ago, but his influence has never waned. His mathematical methods anticipated calculus. His physical principles — the law of the lever, the principle of buoyancy — remain foundational to physics and engineering. His inventions, from the Archimedes screw to the compound pulley, are still in use today.
